Thank you so much for this! We've done family Advent for several years now, but this is the first time I'm also doing something personally (inspired by all the thoughts stemming from reading "Reclaiming Quiet") and so these recommendations are so helpful. And I can't wait to hear about the Reclaiming Quiet Advent you're putting together!
I love this list every year! I must finally get around to Haphazard by Starlight this year. I have so enjoyed The Art of... series over the past few years. Jane William's reflections in the Advent volume brought so much out of the images for me.
In Sunday school I teach Anselm Grün's picture book, The Legend of St Nicholas. Ruth Sanderson's The Nativity: From the Gospels of Matthew and Luke is a marvelous book for little hands, like a medieval book of hours. And Sarah Arthur's Light from Light: A Literary Guide to Prayer for Advent, Christmas, and Epiphany is chock-full of good words to chew on.
I stumbled across a copy of Goudge’s “I Saw Three Ships” at a used book sale and nearly cried with joy! ❤️ I did not know it existed.
Did it hold your children’s attention well? Mine are ages 3 and 6 this year and I am wondering if they will sit through it all (broken up over the course of a few days) or if it’s age appropriate yet?
Hi, April, I'm taking the liberty of answering your question here. I first read "I Saw Three Ships" to my children when they were roughly 9, 6, and 3. I can't remember how well the three-year-olds did, but I do remember the older two being mesmerized. If you have the version with the illustrations by Margot Tomes, and if your kids enjoy read-alouds, they should be just fine to look and listen!
Thanks, Sarah. I will defiantly be looking in to grabbing at least one of these for our family. If you have the ability, you might consider changing the text and color of your links in your settings so it is more obvious that they are links. I would recommend an underline font, maybe a blue or some other contrasting color.
I have been leading my family through advent for years now, but this is my husband and I’s second christmas together and we have decided to fully observe advent followed by the 12 days of Christmas. We are so excited and thrilled to have these resources as we begin our own holiday rituals in our own home! Thank you, thank you!

Oh, thank you so much! ❤️ That’s wonderful to hear. (I have one of your books on MY Christmas list this year…) ✨
I love the book All Creation Waits by Gayle Boss! She also wrote a lovely picture book version of it that was published last year.

Love these resources Sarah, thank you so very much my friend! Bless you as you enjoy this season with your little ones!
Thank you, Sarah, for including All Creation Waits in your list. I've just ordered several other of the books you mention. Such a wealth!
Beautiful post as always, Sarah. Thank you! Our family has loved this wonderful book for the last decade:
